Although it is public knowledge that Porsche intends to come up with a family of production Cayenne hybrids, it was confirmed today that the car will hit dealerships and on the streets by the third quarter of next year with a sticker price of 90,000 Euros. Although details have been scarce, some major details have emerged showing that the Cayenne hybrid will be equipped with V8 performance with four-cylinder level emissions and economy, just like a hybrid. However, the Cayenne is not just about reduced fuel consumption.

Combining an Audi 3.0-liter V6 DFI powerplant that produces 333hp and top torque of 324lb-ft, plus an electric motor that adds another 52hp and 22lb-ft and a 38kW NiMH battery pack, the Cayenne Hybrid S is livelier than the regular hybrid, or 6-cylinder SUV. Its acceleration rating is impressive at 0-62mph (100km/h) in 6.8 seconds even with ULEV II emissions rating, which compared to the regular version 20 percent lower.

The Cayenne can run on all electric only for a distance of 1.2mi (1.9km), and once that reserve is totally depleted, the onboard computer starts the engine, engages the clutch and transfers power, an operation that it completes in just 380ms. And all these, the company claims, happen without both the driver and passenger even noticing. The system is joined together by an 8-speed transmission that is equipped with long gears at the high end for more economical cruising. With the top-speed gear at sixth, the remaining two gears, 7 and 8, become overdrives. The Cayenne S Hybrid can maintain 86mph (138km/h) exclusively on electricity when using the top gear.
