To help strengthen their relationships under the Volkswagen AG umbrella, Porsche Engineering will assist Swedish truckmaker Scania to develop new truck cabs. Volkswagen holds a majority voting stake in Scania. In late 2009, VW took control of Porsche and aims for a merger to be completed in 2011. Last Monday, Scania said that the two companies will develop the next generation of cab frames for its heavy-duty trucks. Per Hallberg, Scania's head of research and development, said that it will develop a cab frame together that is “optimized for Scania's requirements on styling and functionality, as well as for rational production." Porsche spokesman Dirk Erat said that this isn’t the first time that Porsche Engineering has worked for a truckmaker. Erat clarified that it has done some work for the industry, in Eastern Europe for example. In recent years, VW has urged for closer ties between Scania and German truckmaker MAN, another company in which it has a stake. VW owns shares equivalent to 71% of Scania votes and almost 30% of MAN's.
