Last year was a good one for Porsche AG in terms of sales and for 2011, it wants to expand its dealer network into China's interior markets. Porsche China CEO Helmut Broeker said that there are currently 31 Porsche dealerships in mainland China and that 10 dealerships will be opened this year. Broeker added that Porsche has customers deep in China's interior and has reported strong sales growth in Tier 2 and 3 cities. He said that it has opened dealerships in places such as Taiyuan in Shaanxi province and Erdos in Inner Mongolia.
Porsche has also made significant inroads in Chengdu, the capital city of China's Sichuan province. Broeker said that in Chengdu, Porsche sold 20 cars a month but now, that figure has gone up to 80 cars. Broeker noted that the demand in China for sports cars and luxury cars is rapidly growing, something that he says Porsche hopes to take advantage of.
In 2010, Porsche sales increased by 60% to 13,856 units. In this market notorious for its rutted roads, Porsche’s most popular model is the Cayenne SUV. Last year, Porsche sold 8,351 Cayennes in China, outstripping demand for the model in the U.S. Trailing the Cayenne is the Panamera four-door sedan to take second place. In April at the Shanghai auto show, Porsche aims to build on the Panamera's popularity by introducing a new variant. A hybrid Panamera is slated to be launched later this year.
