Portugal police can now sneak around silently for criminals while driving using any unit from a group of Nissan LEAF electric vehicles that had recently been delivered. Portugal's PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública) will operate the eight Nissan LEAF police cars. This is the security force that has been protecting the huge urban regions in the country. The highly awarded cars can be primarily used as part of the PSP's Safe School Program. The difference is that it has flashing blue lights, sirens and clear ‘Polícia' markings. PSP chose the Nissan LEAF as part of its campaign to make its ecological footprint smaller. Superintendent Paul Gomes Valente, National Director of PSP, said that PSP is proud to be the first police force in the world to make use of zero-emission technology. These EVs are part of its 5,000 vehicle fleet. He added that the arrival of the LEAF in its lineup is part of its continuing contribution to the reduction in pollution in large urban centres. This also marks the release of the 100%-electric Nissan LEAF. Portugal is one of the first countries to set up a network of EV chargers in the urban areas. It’s also where the first Nissan LEAF was sold to the European public in 2011.
