Initially introduced in 1999 as a limited version for the 2000 model year during Honda's 50th year anniversary, the S2000 production was extended due to popular customer demand by virtue of its class-leading handling, engine technology and value for cash. The roadster, according to Honda executive vice president John Mendel, was built by "enthusiasts for enthusiasts" and has done its part in raising the standard for succeeding roadsters.

Honda has recently announced that the last model year for this famous roadster will be the 2009 Honda S2000.

The S2000, which is both a road and track sports car, evolved further with a club racer-motivated S2000 CR trim which became initially available in the 2008 model year. The famous roadster has earned numerous awards over time plus a total of four appearances on Car and Driver Magazine's most sought-after "10-Best" list. Since 1999 the roadster has sold in excess of 110,000 models in 64 countries, including more than 65,000 units in the US.
