Production of batteries not fast enough to meet the demand for Prius

2010 Toyota PriusProduction of batteries has not been fast enough to meet the demand for the Toyota Prius. A Toyota official says that this will likely continue until next year.

During its quarterly earnings announcement, Takahiko Ijichi, Toyota senior managing director, said that factories are already working overtime at full capacity but due to the Prius model’s popularity, the batteries are unable to catch up with demand. Toyota Motor Corp. has annual Prius capacity of 500,000 cars. Panasonic EV Energy Co., which makes the nickel-metal hydride batteries for the gasoline-electric hybrid car, can’t currently produce more than that.
