PSA/Peugeot-Citroen to halt production at its Slovak facility

The Slovak facility of PSA/Peugeot-Citroen will put production on hold at the end of the month due to the decrease in orders brought about by the more difficult outlook in Europe with the region's tense economic situation and social turmoil, the Slovak subsidiary said. PSA manufactures the Citroen C3 Picasso and Peugeot 207 subcompact models at its Trnava facility. The company stated that it would cease production from October 28 to November 4 and again from November 14 to 18.
The company has already discontinued production this year, the most recent being in September as the result of supply problems. The central European country of 5.4 million had become the biggest per capita manufacturer of vehicles in the world in 2010, and Slovakia's export-dependent economy is targeted intensely to the automobile industry.
European sales of PSA declined 13.3 percent to 133,469 units in September, according to statistics published on Tuesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Since the start of the year, deliveries have decreased by 7.6 percent to 1.3 million.
