PSA/Peugeot Citroen SA is seeking to produce a vehicle that is environment-friendly for each of its segments, the company's Philippe Varin disclosed in a car conference on Thursday in Brussels. The company, alongside Toyota and Fiat, is one of the top vehicle makers that comply with European Union targets for improving fuel efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company ranked third last year with an average carbon dioxide output of 131.6 grams per kilometer.

On the other hand, Fiat ranked first with an average of 125.9g/km while Toyota was No. 2 at 130.0g/km, according to the market research data from JATO Dynamics. The European Commission wants the industry to bring down the average fleet carbon dioxide to 120g/km beginning in 2012.

In an interview with Automotive News Europe, PSA's No. 2 executive, brands boss Jean-Marc Gales disclosed that by 2012, the company intends to sell at least 1 million car units that emit less than 120g/km of carbon dioxide. Last year, this figure was 720,000 Citroens and Peugeots. Gales added that the company wants to roll out start-stop across its entire vehicle lineup, and save around 15 percent in fuel per model, starting with the new C4. By 2013, the company intends to sell 1 million vehicle units equipped with this technology, Gales further stated.
