Renault abandons hybrids! Going for electric vehicles!

It is confirmed that funding for research and development are being diverted by Renault away from hybrid and hydrogen technologies in favor of exclusively electric cars. Renault envisions that about one-third of its car lineup will be electric in a matter of ten years. By 2011 Renault will be making available three battery-propelled models for sale including an electric Kangoo van, a Clio-sized five-seat hatch and a bigger saloon particularly intended for Israel but could also filter throughout Europe.

The three models will be equipped with NEC lithion-ion batteries which was developed in partnership with Nissan and can provide a minimum range of 100 miles. Renault is also looking into varying ways that buyers could own and drive the cars. This is because of the expensive price tag that goes along with the batteries and the expectation that customers will just lease rather than purchase the vehicles. Also under consideration is battery swapping rather than battery charging.
