Renault and Nissan EVs to be charged in three different ways

There are plans put into place by Renault-Nissan enabling their latest EVs to be charged in three different ways when they hit the European markets in 2011. The electric vehicles will come with two kinds of chargers, one of which will consist of four to eight hours for a full charge and the other will only be for as little as twenty minutes for an 80 percent charge. Another option that will be offered is to exchange a fully used up battery with a fully charged one, which the company claims can be done in as little as three minutes. The third option will include the leasing of batteries to buyers thereby significantly reducing the price of the cars.
Renault-Nissan will not be operating the charging stations but they will be owned by public and private businesses or locally-based organizations. The payment system is likened to paying for a mobile phone subscription. Car users will be charged with a fixed fee for a fixed number of miles and could add extra miles for additional charge.
The first Renault-Nissan EV will be the production model of the Kangoo Z.E Concept van which will be followed by a Megane EV saloon which is exclusively intended for the markets of Israel. The European market will see Nissan's EVs by 2012 together with a diminutive hatch that will be operating alone.
