Renault bringing back the Gordini name

After Renault was reported to have shelved its plans to revive the iconic Alpine brand for a new stand alone sports car, comments from a senior executive caused hopes to be raised with the hint that the Gordini name will instead be brought back. Gordini was an independent carmaker started by Amedee Gordini which was responsible for tuning a number of Renault models in the 50s and 60s. It was reported that Renault will be coming out with some sporty new models beginning next year with the presentation of a Gordini brand in-house tuner.
The relationship of the new brand with Renault is akin to the relationship of AMG with Mercedes or with Abarth and Fiat. The focus of the Gordini brand will be small and fast cars which will be placed above the existing RenaultSport (RS) list. The Twingo hatch will be the first model to receive the Gordini treatment next year.
After this, the Clio and Megane Coupe will also come under the tuning expertise of Gordini as well as other Renault models. The distinctive Gordini mark will be bright blue exterior finish with white stripes on the hood. Model to be developed will include those for track-only deployment and a likelihood of a new competition started solely for them. [ automotive news ]
