Renault considering a plan to revive iconic Renault 5

Renault 5 Sketch

It has now been confirmed that Renault is thinking about creating a new version of the classic Renault 5 to improve its supermini lineup. According to an insider, the company is considering a plan to revive the Renault 5. It’s possible that it will complement the upcoming Twingo and the fourth-generation Clio. A source said that a Renault 5 may be brought back to underpin the Clio. The source added that for this to be a “credible car,” it would need to offer something better than a Twingo. What this means is that being good dynamically isn’t good enough.

It would have to present a concept of the revolution that the 5 had presented to the market in 1972, when it comes to both technology and positioning. The source denies that Renault will launch a DS-style sub-brand in the same manner that French marque Citroën has done. However, the reborn Renault 5 is expected to have a similar role in boosting the brand.

The R5 was the first modern supermini that had a three-door hatchback layout and is considered to be a styling tour de force. It became a top-seller in Europe for a huge portion of the 1970s and it was offered until 1985, when the ‘Supercinq’, which had a similar look, replaced it. Nearly a year ago, Autocar said that there were rumors of a new Renault 5 to come from within the company. Back then, sources thought that by reinventing one of Renault’s most loved and most stylish models, it will get an opportunity to cash in on the quick-growing market for specialty small cars. The planners of Renault would be cautious about creating a too-retro design as it is embarking on a period of designs that are more forward-looking and imaginative.
