Renault F1 confirms using its KERS at the Australian GP

It has been confirmed by Renault F1 that it will become the first team to utilize its Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) at the Australian Grand Prix on March 29 in Melbourne. The decision to used the system beginning with the start of the season was motivated after Renault topped the second day of testing at Jerez yesterday with Fernando Alonso behind the wheel.
The KERS is expected to provide a boost of 80 hp for 6-7 seconds per lap. The carmaker had some intial apprehensions before the KERS was utilized, but since it run so smoothly they are looking forward to using in the race. The concern commonly pointed out besides the cost of developing KERS, is its weight which is thought to cancel any performance advantage it may give the car. Among those who have said they will not use KERS in Australia are Brawn GP, Force India, Red Bull Racing, Scuderia, Toyota, Toro Rossi, and Williams, leaving BMW-Sauber, Ferrari and McLaren to announce whether they will use KERS or not.
