Renault F1 team suspended for two years

Renault F1 MonopostThe FIA imposed a two-year suspended ban on Renault for being involved in fixing the result of last year's Singapore Grand Prix. Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds have received bans from motorsport as well. FIA's World Motor Sport Council members were in a meeting in Paris recently. The governing body held the team guilty of an offense of unparalleled severity after causing a deliberate crash during the event. The offense was worthy of exclusion from the F1 world championship according to the FIA but Renault received a lighter sentence because it admitted being guilty and took action against former team principal Briatore and director of engineering Pat Symonds. Continued after the jump! According to FIA‚ statement, Renault had admitted early on that it committed the acts being charged against it and it cooperated fully with FIA‚ investigation. Further, Renault confirmed that Mr. Briatore and Mr. Symonds were involved in the conspiracy and ensured that they left the team. It also had apologized to the FIA and to the sport and had committed to paying FIA‚ investigation costs. Moreover, Renault (the parent company, as opposed to Renault F1) committed to making a significant contribution to FIA safety-related projects.
