Daimler is looking for a partner to help it expand the Smart city-car brand and to jointly develop engines for its Mercedes-Benz B-Class and other compact models. Pelata divulged that the discussions cover areas of cooperation that include engines, transmissions and platforms. Specifically, Pelata said that talks with Daimler are serious and that carmakers are holding discussions with each other. He said that Renault is in talks with at least someone on all subjects. Pelata said that carmakers seek to share the costs of access to new technologies such as with electric vehicles, batteries and fuel cells. They represent a fixed cost but then carmakers want to acquire these technologies as they could be necessary in the future. Credit Suisse analyst Stuart Pearson said that a partnership, which could take in small car platforms or electric vehicles, would be "more positive for Daimler than for Renault, given their relative size.
