The Renault Kangoo Be Bop ZE prototype, which comes with all the state-of-the-art technology that will reach production in 2011, is the next step in the carmaker's intentions to introduce an electric car in the next two years. The Kangoo will be driven by lithium ion batteries, which will be located under the dash, freeing the trunk for optimized baggage space. A socket located in the front wing is provided for recharging purposes. The Kangoo can be charged via regular household outlets from 6-8 hours, or can be equipped with a three-phase plug which can charge the battery pack up to 80 percent capacity in just half an hour. Included in the power-saving features of the Kangoo are regenerative breaking, and wheels that come with flat surfaces to enhance the flow of air around the vehicle.
The ride height of the Kangoo is 20mm lower than the regular model. The carmaker is also part of a move, that involves the German energy company RWE and 20 other carmakers, in coming up with a standardized charging plug for the Entire European region. With this standardized plug, the Kangoo can be charged to the maximum in just a mere 20 minutes.
Power under the new car is a 50bhp (140lb-ft) powerplant that comes with a 12,000 rpm limiter linked to a single-speed reducer. The Kangoo claims a maximum speed of 80mph and a current effective range of 62 miles which will be extended to hit 100 miles when the first production Renault EVs will be released, such as the Kangoo van intended for the European market and the all-electric Megan saloon intended for Israel. By 2012, a brand new standalone EV patterned after the platform of the Clio will be released by the company.
