Renault-Nissan alliance to build two lithium-ion battery plants in the UK

In a development applauded by UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the Renault-Nissan alliance announced its decision to build two lithium-ion battery manufacturing plants in the United Kingdom and Portugal. These two plants will produce the batteries for the electric vehicles to be manufactured by the tie-up and which are set to hit the market in 2011. Each plant will produce 60,000 units annually. In the UK, the site will be in Sunderland while the site in Portugal has yet to be finalized. Prime Minister Brown expressed his appreciation for the investment, citing that it will boost local economy as it creates 350 direct jobs and even more in the associated supply chain. He also mentioned its significance as it relates to Britain‚ plan for a future powered by low carbon, high technology industries, products and services.
