Renault preparing an electric competitor for Toyota Prius

Renault's zero-emissions family option is set to follow the Kangoo in 2011 and it is seen as a competitor for the Toyota Prius. The car, which will measure 4.7-meters in length, will use Renault-Samsung's SM3 as a basis. Due to its weight and size, the car will need a bigger battery pack and more power compared to its EV rangemates. It's expected to be priced at a little more than €20k. Renault will soon be showing off its smallest La Regie battery cars, the third of the series. It is sized at 3.5 meters and is a two-seater city car. Renault has said that it has a distinctive and unusual design. Due to government subsidies, expect the €13k starting price to be halved. Renault has not hinted at how the car will appear although it's bound to be interesting considering its alliance with partner Nissan, which bared its Nissan Nuvu EV concept in last year's motor show in Paris. Renault's quartet will be completed as soon as it launches its four-meter battery supermini in 2012. [via autocar]
