Renault Twingo CC: first details revealed

The speedster set will not only be joined by MINI as the two-seat Renault Twingo CC, ready to hit the streets in a year's time, is described as the spiritual successor of the famous Ford Puma and is the French carmaker's reply to the successful Peugeot 207 CC. Spy shots provide the initial indication of the latest model's ingenious one-piece hardtop in addition to its spectacular front section. Codenamed the X33, the car measures 3.70 meters long and will provide users two engine choices. The new model comes with a 14,000 beginning price tag. The entry-level model is planned currently to be equipped with the 100bhp, 1.2-liter TCE powerplant employed in the Twingo GT. Under development is a flagship version which would utilize the 131bhp 1.6-liter unit from the Twingo RS. Engine range is still uncertain because of Renault's plan to reduce emissions of its whole vehicle line.
Top officials of the company have already made public a vision to create a new range of cars with carbon emissions averaging only 40g/km by 2012. To achieve this the carmaker says that it will complement its new generation of EVs with a range of ultra-efficient gasoline and diesel units. Whether there will be an all-electric Twingo is still uncertain, however, options being discussed at present consist of a 900 cc 3-cylinder gasoline and a high-end 1.6-liter 140bhp diesel. No matter what the engine is fitted, Renault will put in anti-lock brakes that come with front discs and rear drums as standard to provide superb braking capabilities. All models will get ESP in keeping with Renault's goal of being recognized as Europe's safest carmaker. The new Twingo CC will be produced in the company's Dieppe plant together with other models in range of Renaultsport. There is no information, however, which model will come with the company's performance badge or whether top brass of Renaultsport plans to reserve for top-of-the-line versions only.
