Report: Acura preparing an unconventional model

Acura isn’t that straightforward when it comes to sharing details about its plans but at the launch of the refreshed Acura RL flagship, its executives and PR reps gave hints about this car’s successor and the sports-car-like model that it might soon offer. Acura’s product chief Vicki Poponi said that it’s likely that the next Acura flagship will be named RL and it will not be powered by a V-8. Poponi cites surveys that indicate how little luxury customers value their cylinder count.
Acura mentioned the rise in demand for improved fuel economy and how luxury customers have had to trim down their excessive ways due to the economic crisis. They also cited several times that Honda is a “very conservative company” and that RL customers are “conservative” too.
It was revealed that Acura will be presenting an unconventional model sometime around the launch of the new flagship sedan. Honda didn’t confirm if it will be sporty or if it will be named NSX. Two years ago, there was a front-engine supercar seen at the Nürburgring but Acura insiders said that it was canceled over concerns that it would be crass to offer a $150K–$175K sports car during the crisis.
