Report: Acura to put fuel economy ahead of performance

Japanese luxury brand Acura is all set to achieve tier 1 luxury automaker status, not by engaging in the horsepower war but in going the fuel economy route. The past decades, we've witnessed how automakers use big and powerful models to draw attention to themselves. Acura acknowledges that hitting the 2016 CAFE requirements is going to be a challenge. John Watts, senior manager of Acura product planning, said that the brand believes that the balance of power and economy is currently what's drawing the crowd and looking at the trend of fuel prices, they're expecting that this will continue. In relation to this, parent company Honda decided to axe development of a new generation V8 engine and rear-wheel-drive platform. Instead, Acura is considering to adopt hybrid technology.
