What won’t come as a surprise is that 2009 US auto sales plunged or that the Ford brand passed No. 2 Chevrolet. But we’ll have to wait for the final tally on whether Hyundai-Kia can oust Nissan North America from the big six of U.S. sales. For the first 11 months, the Nissan and Infiniti brands led Hyundai-Kia 696,699 to 680,282. Continued after the jump!
There is a 16,000 gap that Nissan had aimed to close in a single month. The margin in 2008 was more than a quarter of a million sales, so the Koreans have been gaining on Nissan by an average of 23,000 a month all year. Between the No. 11 Subaru and No. 12 Volkswagen, the margin is actually much tighter, with only 511 units separating them.
December‚ results are very much highly anticipated as it will determine the winner. Acura‚ lead on Cadillac in the first 11 months is only 801 units. In addition, Lincoln passed Infiniti by only 399 units. And there is more.
The Toyota Corolla/Matrix and the Honda Accord have a volume of about 250,000 units but after 11 months, they have a gap of only 836 units. Incidentally, the Corolla outsold the Accord by 4,660 in November.
