Due to new model launches, BMW AG expects that its upward sales trend will continue for the rest of the year. It had posted its first year-on-year volume gain of 2009 and says that it could be possible that it will finish the year with a profit. In a statement, group sales chief Ian Robertson said that there is a "good chance" that at year end, it will have a "moderate decrease in sales of only 10 to 15% from 2008 levels."
In mid-September, Finance chief Friedrich Eichiner said that if volumes are not below 10-15% then there" a chance the group will post a profit in 2009. As long as there are no economic setbacks, BMW should proceed to make gains for the rest of the year. Joining its model range in late October are the new BMW models X1 and 5-Series Gran Turismo. Robertson said that BMW unit sales rose 0.7% in September to 122,354 vehicles, fueled by a 9.5% gain at its Mini brand. Globally, BMW sold 24,759 Minis last month while BMW brand sales were down 1.2% to 97,545 units. From January to September 2009, group volumes dropped 15.7% to 939,554 vehicles following double-digit declines in both its BMW and Mini brands.
