Report: Honda won’t try to make profit from Toyota’s recall

Unlike its major competitors, Honda has decided not to exploit Toyota's customers who are in a quandary right now in light of the massive recall. Recently, General Motors and Ford have announced that they were offering incentives for Toyota owners to trade in their vehicles. Honda chose to abstain from these sales tactics because it "will not react in a predatory way towards either Toyota or Toyota customers," according to a letter issued to Honda and Acura dealers last week.

John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, also asked its dealers to avoid commenting on the matter. Mendel informed Honda dealers that if they are asked about the matter, they should mention that Honda vehicles are not affected by the recall, and that it knows of no similar issues in its vehicles.

He emphasized that even if Honda uses parts from the same supplier (CTS) that produced the defective gas pedals, it does not use any of the same parts as Toyota. Honda's decision to refrain from attempting to entice Toyota customers away is noble. However, many have questioned its timing. Honda just recently recalled almost 646,000 first-generation Fits -- 140,000 of them in the U.S. -- to replace a faulty power window switch that could ignite a fire.
