Report: Hyundai and Kia planning to build 2,500 electric vehicles by 2012

According to the latest reports from Automotive News, it appears that Kia Motors, a.k.a. the No.2 car manufacturer in South Korea, aims to produce 2,000 units of its new electric vehicles by 2012. These words came from an executive at Kia’s affiliate Hyundai Motor, who also added that the upcoming vehicle will be based on company’s upcoming compact sports utility vehicle and will be rolled out in South Korea in December 2011.
As you may know already, Hyundai also unveiled last week the BlueOn, its first electric vehicle which is based on the i10 hatchback, and the Korean manufacturer wants to produce 500 units of this electric car starting in 2010.
"We plan to produce 2,000 electric vehicles based on Kia's upcoming cross utility vehicles (CUVs), and 500 BlueOns by 2012," said Hong John-hee, director of its parent Hyundai Motor Group's Electric Vehicle Development.
According to Hong, the two models will be sold to government organizations in South Korea by 2012, while the commercial sales will start in 2013. [via autonews - sub. required]
