Report: Lincoln considering a new luxury pickup truck

Ford Motor Co. is hoping that its third attempt to sell a new luxury pickup from Lincoln would be a success. Previously, Ford has revealed plans to revive the luxury brand with seven all-new or revised vehicles within the next four years. A source said that a new luxury pickup is included in this list. The first time that Ford tried to sell a high-end hauler to luxury buyers was when it offered the controversially styled and functionally limited 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. This only lasted for a single model year. Next, the carmaker offered the 2005-2008 Lincoln Mark LT but it didn’t do well in the U.S and Canada as it was deemed too similar to the Ford F-150 to achieve success on its own. Ford still offers a unique version of the Mark LT on the south of the border, where the Lincoln brand has an exclusive image that Ford hopes to have elsewhere.
It is believed that Mexican buyers will agree to pay more for a Lincoln-badged vehicle than they would for a comparable one with a Ford blue oval. This upcoming Lincoln pickup is said to resemble the Ford F-250 Super Chief concept truck that was displayed at the 2006 Detroit auto show, just after the sales peak of US pickup sales in 2005. The Super Chief was very luxurious and its wheelbase was stretched for maximum passenger comfort.
The interior was covered in rich burled walnut, leather and aluminum. The second row had two huge LCD televisions that fell from the ceiling to entertain backseat passengers seated on Hollywood-mogul-style club chairs facing a pleasure dome ceiling. A slide-out minibar was stowed in the center console. Back then, Ed Golden, the Super Chief’s design director, said that they wanted to explore the ceiling as one way to boost high-end interiors. He said that there’s still a “pent-up demand” from buyers for even more luxury. He added that for buyers who want “tough luxury,” this would be the truck they would offer. Ford has yet to confirm this report. Last Monday, Lincoln spokesman Christian Christian Bokich denied plans for a luxury pickup. [via PickupTrucks]
