Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has teamed up with Korea's LG Chem Co. Ltd. to jointly develop a lithium-ion battery system, according to a report from the Nikkei business daily. The two companies intend to use this system on small electric cars that have launch dates in fiscal 2012 and on new plug-in hybrids that are slated to be introduced in 2013.
LG Chem declined to give a comment. The report had further stated that the development may result to the first time that a Japanese automaker uses lithium-ion batteries made overseas.
