Report: Sberbank says GM should compensate it for aborting Opel sale
Due to General Motors Co.’s sudden decision not to proceed with the Opel sale, Russian state-controlled lender Sberbank is demanding for compensation, the Associated Press reports.
If GM doesn’t give in, Sberbank said that it will be forced to file a lawsuit for the botched sale attempt. The deal that would have allowed Sberbank and Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International Inc. to buy a stake in Opel fell through in November after months of negotiations. GM’s board decided to keep Opel. Sberbank CEO German Gref said in televised comments that GM should voluntarily compensate his company for its decision. Gref said that GM’s commitment “went so far that they should have sealed the deal.”
