Report: Toyota Prius is Japan’s best selling vehicle in June

2010 Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius was Japan's best selling vehicle in June, with 22,292 sold units, just-auto reports. Contributing to this result were the newly introduced government tax breaks and subsidies for the hybrid. It appears that sales will not decline anytime soon since the demand for fuel efficient vehicles continues to rise. With this record, the Prius has managed to beat even small displacement vehicles, which have engines up to 660 cc. Toyota's hybrid sales rose 257.8% than during the same month last year. The Prius arrived only in May but looking at Japan's record during the first six months of the year, the Prius still ended up at the fifth place. Competitor Honda's Insight did not fare as well; it took the seventh spot in June behind Suzuki Wagon R, Daihatsu Move and Tanto. In the half-year race, the Insight sold 8,782 units, placing Honda at the 11th place with total sales of 36,457 units.
