BMW is using a more radical approach to its development of a compact luxury model when it comes to innovation and appeal. BMW is focusing on this segment in response to the increasing demand for cars in this segment and the rise of rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz. BMW is preparing to present its 2er line in a more expansive program that emulates the bigger 6er and upcoming 4er family line to provide the customer with a more sporting and exclusive option. BMW is taking on a key symmetrical approach to develop a 1er Sedan based on its new modular FWD architecture together with a development MINI sedan. This is targeted at raising the potential of the popular small car in markets where small sedans are displaying outstanding growth like China and the US. BMW has set out to give these small sedans a global outlook. In principle, a MINI sedan may top sales and fall behind the present MINI Countryman. A FWD BMW 1er sedan would be the rational choice so it can be built together with the MINI sedan.
There’s a slight issue though as BMW customers prefer a RWD small sedan. BMW is going ahead with its Gran Coupe series for the 4er after the launch of the BMW 6er Gran Coupe. The BMW 2er Gran Coupe is an extension of the 2er family and will provide a more flexible option for the customer who admires Coupe looks and performance but requires more practicality but considers the current 3er to be too big or too out of range. BMW wants to build excitement in the FWD dominated compact segment and the Gran Coupe (RWD) is a car to provide classic sporting BMW values and a sense of tradition against modern competitors.
The design 2er line emphasizes the need for individuality and to be differentiated against the other models in the range with both the RWD and FWD BMW 1er models displaying this intention to emphasize the sportier look of the distinct 2er. The 2er Gran Coupe features a unique appearance for the front and rear ends of the car over the present distinctive 1er. It shares features with the upcoming Coupe and Cabrio models but gets interesting at the mid-line where the glasshouse meets the shoulder line. Due to the stretch to fit in a slightly extended platform as per the other Gran Coupe models the elongated roofline is lower, more rounded and coupe-like in profile which goes well with the short overhangs in both front and rear of the 2er.
