Rumor: Electric Rolls-Royce Phantom coming within the next 12 months

2010 Rolls-Royce PhantomDon’t get too excited now but it could well be possible that Rolls-Royce will have an electric Phantom on the road within a year and just in time for the car to be one of the centerpieces of BMW’s sponsorship of the 2012 London Olympics. It’s well-known that company boss Tom Purvis wants to produce an electric Rolls to offset any possible future ban on big-engined saloons in urban areas and hedge against tough inner-city CO2 legislation. Rolls-Royce officials believe that the near-silence of electric propulsion, and the fact that full torque is available from a standstill, would align perfectly with Rolls-Royce’s core values. Engineers are currently working hard to make this a reality and to soon have a running prototype. The company is adamant about electric technology and has vowed to do what it can to make the electric Phantom a technological showcase. It’s likely that only a few units will be produced. Rolls-Royce is anticipating a sales model based on the electric Mini, which is only available on a leasing scheme at selected cities.
