Rumor: Kia ready to start Soulster Concept production

Whether the Kia Soulster will make it into production is anyone's guess. At the Detroit Auto Show, the Kia Soulster was featured. It is actually a concept version of the Kia Soul that has had major changes done to it. The car's two doors, roof and rear windows were removed, creating an open-air, truck-like vehicle. The design team is reportedly pushing Kia to move forward and make the Soulster a production model. The Soulster concept was introduced for Kia executives to gauge public reaction. Since compact pickup sales are at a six-year low, Kia thinks the Soulster could easily slide into the segment as consumers move toward smaller vehicles. With the Soulster, Kia may be trying to reinvent the compact pickup truck segment that was popular in the '80s and '90s. Because half-ton pickups are priced near that of compact trucks, most of the time buyers will move up to a larger truck at a minimal price increase. There is speculation that Kia would be able to prevent consumers from purchasing full-size pickups if the Soulster would be priced in the $10,000 - $15,000 range.
