Rumor: Lexus IS Coupe coming in 2012

A comprehensive redesign is planned for the Lexus GS next year. One of the changes is the use of upgraded underpinnings that will serve as the basis of Lexus' next generation 5-Series fighter. The new architecture will be used as the basis of the next IS, the present form of which is basically a shortened and crushed GS. And that is why the next generation IS will follow shortly after (likely to be in 2012). Lexus is expected to add an IS coupe to its lineup, which already has the sedan and convertible versions.
Lexus admits that for a long time, it hasn’t been considered to be a credible participant in this market. Many are asking why Lexus hasn’t made this move sooner, especially as rivals have stepped up their game. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe will soon be released and so far, the two-door BMW 3 Series has been very competitive.
Sources say that the IS cabrio was an easier business case for Toyota to build as SC430 was on its way out and Lexus needed a drop-top model to fill this slot. The sources added that it’s very likely that the coupe will be released and that the two-door IS is expected to bow sometime in late 2012 or early 2013. It’s easy to conclude that an F version is expected to arrive within year after the coupe makes its debut. [via Autoblog]
