Rumor: Mazda RX-9 could be hydrogen-powered

The rotary engine of Mazda has placed it in a quite unique position in the automobile world. The Wankel powerplant incidentally runs quite well on hydrogen and is not as vulnerable to many of hydrogen's failings as in other internal combustion units. The Japanese car maker has had hydrogen-fueled rotary-propelled vehicles on the streets for the last few years and the car maker has earlier suggested that it hopes to have a hydrogen-fueled car in the assembly lines within the next five years. Auto Motor und Sport is now hinting that Mazda's next-generation rotary-propelled sportscar, the RX-9, will highlight a two-fuel configuration, being able to run on both gasoline and hydrogen gas. If these stories are precise, it can be expected that Mazda's first production hydrogen car will reach the streets by 2012 and go back to a standard 2-door body style. The present RX-8 utilizes a set of reverse-hinged doors just aft of the normal front entry.
