Rumor: Mercedes-Benz SSK AMG will be the baby SLS?

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Do you think that the Porsche 911 would be threatened by a baby version of Mercedes-Benz's SLS AMG Gullwing supercar? Mercedes-Benz is thinking exactly that as it develops this car. A source said that the new sports car would have a shortened version of the SLS supercar's platform. It would copy its aluminum construction and use V8 power but instead of lift-up doors, it will have the conventional front-hinged access to make sure that the price is below $200,000. The two-seater, which is speculated to soon be known as the SSK AMG, is on track for a 2014 launch. It will also be offered in soft-top roadster form. The baby supercar is slated to be bigger than the next-generation SLK roadster due in 2011. Meanwhile, its V8 will be smaller than the SLS's 6.2-liter but will be turbocharged for about 375kW and a 0-100km/h time of about 4.5 seconds. AMG's second stand-alone model that's not based on an existing Mercedes-Benz is part of a plan to further establish the tuning division (which is majority owned by Benz's parent company, Daimler) in supercar territory.
