Rumor: Mini Cooper and Clubman S Diesel in the works

The latest spy pictures are a dead giveaway that the MINI will soon launch a more powerful turbo diesel model to complement the existing MINI One D and Cooper D. The car is seen to have two centrally mounted tailpipes, just like the Cooper S and the John Cooper Works. The Clubman version also sports one pipe on each side. The car's power is evident in the distinctive engine sound that diesel-powered cars have.
The front bumper also has a slightly different design. Since only some prototypes had the cosmetic-only bonnet scoop, it can't be concluded whether this feature will be kept or not. The petrol Cooper S range uses a 1.6-litre twin scroll turbo that gives it a maximum power output of 128kW (172hp) and 240Nm of torque (260Nm with overboost). On the other hand, the MINI One D generates only 66kW (90hp) and 215Nm while the Cooper D produces 80kW (110hp) and 240Nm. What this means is that we can expect the Cooper S D to produce between 103kW (140hp) and 110kW (150hp) with a peak torque that‚ around the 300Nm mark. [via autoblog]
