Rumor: Next-generation Nissan 200SX to get green light

Insiders say that Nissan is prepared to compete against the reborn Mazda RX-7 and VW Scirocco with a follow-up to its 200SX coupe. Replacing the 200SX that was scrapped in 2002, this new two-door will slot under the 370Z to give Nissan a more fuel-efficient and inexpensive fastback to rival the Scirocco and Renault's three-door Megane. Just like its predecessor, the new Nissan will be rear-wheel drive. However, finding a suitable platform on which to build it is proving difficult. Nissan considered a cut-down 370Z chassis but it was deemed to be too heavy.
At one point, Nissan was considering the open-top, rear-drive sports car but this plan has been terminated. Nissan chose to utilize the next generation of its Tiida hatchback to boost its family car lineup alongside the Qashqai. This hatchback is sold in Ireland and Russia, but nowhere else in Europe. The Qashqai crossover has been named a success but the company still prefers a conventional hatch (which replaces the Almera) to compete against the VW Golf and Ford Focus across Europe.
