Rumor: Shelby GT500 Mustang to receive an EcoBoost V8 engine

2010 Shelby GT500 MustangFord Motor Co. claims that its engine – the EcoBoost V8 Shelby GT500 Mustang – has more power, less fuel consumption, and lower emissions. Despite detractors saying that it’s too good to be true, Ford is prepared to prove it by offering this technology in up to 90% of its line-up by mid-decade. The carmaker also plans to expand the engine variations. Continued after the jump!

While Ford has been talking mostly about the EcoBoost used on the new, aluminum 3.5-liter V6, it has now confirmed a version of the system that will go onto an inline-four, as well. TheDetroitBureau reports that according to its sources, Ford is thinking about using the EcoBoost technology on a modified V8, as well, which might serve as the replacement for the big block eight-banger currently used in muscle cars such as the Shelby Cobra Mustang.

Detroit News says however that Ford also wants to take EcoBoost technology in the other direction, with a possible 1.0-liter I4 application that could be used in future small cars, such as the Fiesta subcompact coming to the US in mid-2010. By the middle of the decade, Ford should already have generated a 35% increase in its fuel economy; that is, if it works.

Earlier, Ford pledged to increase SUV fuel economy 25% in five years. It was dubbed “25 in 5” but the Ford has backed off from this promise. Top Ford officials, including product development chief Derrick Kuzak, said that EcoBoost will play a big factor in achieving its fuel economy target.
