Rumor: Upcoming Smart ForTwo will grow up

Mercedes-Benz is planning something really awesome. Here are the pictures captured of a mule of the next-generation Fortwo city car conducting some hot-weather tests in the south of France. Sources revealed that the new Fortwo will form the base for a lager, stretched Smart, currently known as the Fortwo+2. Due to its limited space, the Fortwo has lagged behind rivals such as Toyota's iQ. The Fortwo is bound to face more competition with more premium vehicles on the way, including Audi's A1 and the rumored BMW Isetta.

In fact, Smart has begun work on its own four-seater. The new Fortwo+2 will also get rear doors. The standard Fortwo will remain a strict two-seater though, with both new cars continuing to be rear-wheel-drive, and housing the engine below the floor at the rear.

The added length for the extra seats in the Fourtwo+2 will be coming from the longer wheelbase. Watch out for the Fortwo to arrive in showrooms late next year however, the four-seater won´t be arriving until 2012. Both cars will be offered with an extensive range of engine options. It's very likely that there will be a hybrid and an electric version too.
