Saab is in talks on sharing technology on future models

Talks are ongoing between Saab and at least six automakers about sharing technology on future models, Spyker CEO Victor Muller said in an interview with Automotive News Europe at the Geneva Motor Show. Muller said that the company has been approached by OEMs who want to become technology partners. He didn't identify the automakers but only to say that some German brands are included. A source who declined to be named said that Volkswagen AG and its premium unit, Audi, are not participating in these talks. Last February, Spyker Cars NV completed the purchase of Saab from General Motors Co.
Under this deal, Saab's production- and intellectual property-sharing agreement with GM is effective until 2012, which is when the new 9-3 premium compact line will be introduced. Saab Managing Director Jan Ake Jonsson had said after the deal was announced that it has the flexibility to partner with another carmaker and that the next-generation 9-3 could be the first opportunity to bring in a new engine from other suppliers.
Muller described it as the "beauty of being independent." Muller said that it's possible for the partnership to involve engines, components or platforms. However, he emphasized that it's still too early to say anything sensible so soon after the takeover. He explained that engines and platforms can't be changed in the middle of a car's lifecycle. Most likely, plans for the next 9-3 will be clearer after two years. [via autonews]
