Saab will cut its workforce by one-eighth or 200 workers, from about 1,600 employees, according to Hakan Skott, a union representative. Saab, based in the western Sweden town of Trollhattan, is owned by Dutch supercar maker Spyker Cars NV. Saab has yet to make any comment with regards to this report. In an interview with Retuers, Skoff said that he is “not exactly surprised” that there will be layoffs.
He pointed out that just two weeks ago, the company lowered its sales forecast. Skoff also cited that a sales decline is expected around Christmas and at the end of the year. He said that sales will go up again in the February-March period.
Earlier this year, Saab was in the process of being wound down but Spyker showed up just in time. Spyker took control of Saab, which continues to have a strong relationship with GM. Its top executives said last Thursday that the future of Saab will depend on whether it will find more manufacturing partners and if it will be able to cut production ion costs.
