SAIC Motor might gain access to GM’s sales network in the U.K.

SAIC Motor Corp. might be given access to partner General Motor Co.'s UK sales network, according to Kevin Wale, president and managing director for GM's China operations. At a Reuters' event last Monday, Wale said that SAIC has agreed in a memorandum to start talks about the potential for MG to be distributed in the UK. Wale revealed that so far, there have been no talks about sharing GM's dealer network in North America.

With the UK deal, SAIC would be the only Chinese automaker to secure access to a partner's overseas dealer network. SAIC became the owner of MG Rover's 10,000-unit Longbridge plant in Birmingham, England, after a merger with its Nanjing Automobile Group, in late 2007.

SAIC intends to begin producing the MG series sedan in the UK by the end of this year and sell them across the European Union, according to chairman Hu Maoyuan’s interview with Reuters last January. In November, SAIC purchased almost a 1% stake in GM. [via autonews - sub. required]
