SAIC Motor Corp. is set to manufacture and sell its MG 6 sedan in the United Kingdom in the first quarter of 2011, president Chen Hong said, as China's leading domestic automaker aims to revive the British marque. SAIC executives said that the MG 6 cars will be made in Longbridge, England, which will also serve as a platform for tapping the European market in the future. SAIC's latest move will make it the first Chinese automaker to make and sell vehicles in a mature market.
SAIC became the owner of MG Rover's 10,000-unit Longbridge plant after a merger in late 2007 with its much smaller rival, Nanjing Automobile Group. Nanjing Automobile acquired the factory after MG Rover collapsed due to financial difficulties.
MG Rover is the U.K.'s latest domestic volume carmaker. In China, SAIC operates joint ventures with Volkswagen AG and General Motors Co. SAIC is among a growing group of Chinese firms, including Geely Automobile Holdings and Chery Automobile, which aim to make their name recognized globally.
