For the seventh straight month, sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks have increased. In July, 21,493 units were sold, a 10% increase.
This streak is remarkable because before this sales rebound, there had been three years of declines. Sales of Class 8 trucks increased by 28% to 9,589 units; however, there were sharp divisions by brand for Class 8s. At Freightliner, International, Volvo and Western Star, sales increased by double-digit percentages or more. But at Kenworth, Peterbilt and Sterling, sales dropped by double-digit percentages. Sales of Class 7 trucks fell by 1% to 3,070. Sales of Class 6 trucks climbed 22% to 2,235. Sales of Class 5s rose by 72% to 3,162. Sales of Class 4 medium-duty trucks decreased by 35% to 3,437. Freightliner's total sales went up by 88% to 5,616, pushing it to the top spot among truckmakers in July, from being ranked third a year ago. International's sales increased by 16% to 5,102 units. Ford Motor Co. sold 4,757 units, a 15% decrease, pulling its rank down to No. 3, from No. 1 a year earlier. From January to July 2010, sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks increased by 9% to 138,689.
