The first gain in three years for sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks is definitely news. A total of 17,557 trucks were sold in January, meaning that sales rose 3% from the previous year. Many say that the rise in commercial-truck sales is a leading economic indicator. The last rise in commercial-truck sales was in January 2007. Last December, sales of large trucks dropped 6%, the only single-digit decline of 2009. Total sales of trucks in classes 4 through 8 dropped 30% last year. January's rebound was felt in all size classes, except the smallest medium-duty trucks. Only 2,920 Class 4 trucks, the smallest, were sold, an 8% drop over the previous year. On the other hand, the Class 8 trucks, the largest, remained steady at 7,387 vs. 7,374 in January 2009. Sales of Class 5s went up 15% to 2,063 while sales of Class 6 trucks also rose 15%, to 2,109. Class 7 sales rose 5% to 3,078.
