Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice might be saved

GM is open to proposals for the plant from anyone with a workable plan. With the June 1 government restructuring deadline looming, GM is axing brands, factories and dealers just to meet it. Both the Sky and Solstice convertible came on the scene in 2006 and became instant hits due to their performance ratings and affordable price tags. The late addition is the Solstice hardtop which was released just last month. Both cars come with front-mounted powerplant, RWD and share common underpinnings and turbo-charged 4-cylinder unit that produces 260hp. Continued after the jump!
It seems that the cars have fallen victims of the government induced restructuring, which will result in the shelving of Pontiac by the end of next year and a closing down or selling of Saturn by the end of this year. GM said that it‚ not selling individual factories, but simply said that it is open to the idea of vending the entire sports-car segment. It is of note that the plant at Delaware, which GM is trying to vend, also manufactures the Opel GT, a comparable sports car for the German section of GM.
Some analyses have come up to the conclusion that the Sky has a greater chance of surviving as GM plans to sell Saturn before this year ends and is also willing to sell factories to go with it for support. Interested parties include Renault-Nissan and Roger Penske owner of IndyCar team. On the other hand, Pontiac, one of the oldest brands of GM, is sure to be shelved since there are no talks within the car company to move the brand.
