Seat’s workers from Martorell factory accepting pay freeze to win Audi Q3

Seat, VW group's Spanish arm, is now able to make the new Audi Q3 SUV after majority of its labor force agreed to a two-year salary freeze. The German firm asked Seat workers to agree to a pay freeze in lieu of an order for a new car model to which 65 percent reportedly gave a nod to the proposition. The plant of Seat outside Barcelona is expecting to build the Q3. With the rejection of the proposition 1,500 jobs could have been made redundant or about 20 percent of the staff at the Matorell plant. Having been a consistent underperformer for the VW group, Seat has a risky overdependence on its domestic Spanish outlets where the sales of new-cars have significantly dropped. In 2008, Seat had an operating loss amounting to 78 million Euros in contrast to only 8 million Euro profit in 2007. Unit sales fell 14.6 percent representing 368,100 cars in 2008. There was a 28 percent drop (1.16 million units) in new-car registrations in Spain last year.
