The Rally of Spain was won comfortably by Sebastien Loeb – his seventh victory of the season. Meanwhile, Citroen team-mate Dani Sordo was unable to fend off Petter Solberg from taking second place. Since the opening day of the revamped mixed-surface event ran mostly on gravel, it was expected that Loeb would lose time running first on the road. However, Loeb was aided by the slightly damp conditions and was able to take an immediate lead even as Citroen Junior's Sebastien Ogier had been pressuring him. From second place, Ogier fell to 17th when he misheard a pace note and slid into a barrier.
With this win, Loeb was able to maintain his unbeaten run on asphalt through a seventh season. Loeb, who now has six wins in Spain, said that once again, he had a “very good result in Spain.” He explained that there was nothing to play for in the championship so there was no added pressure and this allowed him to “push very hard from the opening day.”
He said that once he started leading, taking the two days on asphalt became “easier." Sordo didn’t do so well on Friday and began day two a minute off the lead in sixth. But when he got back on asphalt, he was very quick and this put him right onto the Solberg Citroen's tail. Solberg was able to keep things under control, securing second place by 5.8 seconds despite concerns that he was "too sideways" on the last stage.
