Mazda named a new compact crossover after TV and movie actor Patrick Dempsey that it dubbed the CX-5 Dempsey. It is currently on display at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Dempsey got the honor for having raced competitively for many years. He has participated in the Rolex Grand Am series, behind the wheels of Mazda RX-8 race cars for a team he owns.
The CX-5 Dempsey is based on Mazda’s new compact crossover and features matte black and “Anatomy Gray” paint with red detailing (obviously named after Dempsey’s hit show ‘Grey’s Anatomy’). The vehicle comes with a Bicycle S-Works Tarmac road bike and a Thule Atlantis rooftop cargo box. It rides on 20-inch black chrome wheels with red detailing while it also features a Racing Beat dual exhaust system.
The cabin’s interior has been updated to feature new seating surfaces that use black perforated leather inserts and gray bolsters with red accents. In addition, leather was used to cover the steering wheel, shift boot, armrests, door panels and center storage bin with contrasting Luminous Red stitching throughout.
Its most significant feature is its original powerplant. It comes with a new 2.2-liter diesel Skyactiv engine that delivers 173 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Nonetheless, some may argue that this CX-5 crossover should have been made sportier or given more spectacular features.
There’s more than meets the eye with the new Mazda CX-5. It enters the compact crossover SUV competition with its exquisite driving passion that characterizes the Mazda badge. The CX-5 sets to ignite a different form of emotion with its perfect blend of impressive performance and innovative style. Built with a fresh design platform, the CX-5’s “KODO – Soul of Motion” design takes its inspiration from the strength and grace of nature and the power of motion.
Mazda initially launched the KODO design with the 4-door sports coupe Mazda Shinari in 2010, and the compact crossover SUV Mazda Minagi which precedes the CX-5. Beginning with the Mazda CX-5, KODO will be adopted to usher in a new batch of modern Mazda cars that are created with a greater sense of speed, force, and soul of motion.
Overflowing with sensitivity, agility and energy, the spirit of KODO is seen in the way animals move. The designers and engineers of the Mazda CX-5 especially focused its research on cheetahs, the king of speed in the animal kingdom, studying the mechanisms of its body in functioning like a spring. Enthused by its impressive poise and dexterity, the team in Mazda employs KODO to set the appearance and interiors of the SUV to a greater level.
The outcome is an elegant exterior that expresses a sophisticated form of motion and promises an exceptional SUV performance while maintaining the ideal strength and convenience that the SUV is known for.
Combining form with function
Mazda developers aimed for a competitive design that achieves a near-perfect balance among form, performance and function. This active and powerful blend of Mazda’s drama and dynamism shall certainly meet the high expectations of a crossover SUV customer.
