2013 SEMA Show: 2014 Honda Civic Coupe debuts in Las Vegas

Article by Christian Andrei, on November 5, 2013

Japanese carmaker Honda is injecting more improvements and upgrades on the MY2014 Honda Civic, building on the redesigned MY2012 Civic and the refreshed MY2013 model. All Civic models don upgrades in interior styling while the Civic Coupe and Civic Si Coupe get sportier exterior styling. All Civic models, except for the Natural Gas and Hybrid – have their engines upgraded for better performance.

Customers could avail of the new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for improved performance and fuel efficiency. In terms of fuel consumption, the new Civic HF boasts of a class-leading 35 mpg combined EPA rating. The MY2014 Honda Civic now features Honda LaneWatch blind spot display and Smart Entry with Push Button Start as well as Display Audio with seven-inch pinch, tap and swipe touchscreen.

After engaging in a major refresh of Civic Sedan styling for model year 2013, Honda focused on the Civic Coupe. With the refresh, the Civic Coupe gets major revisions in exterior design, including a more aggressive grille, fender, hood and headlight design as well as new taillight lenses, sportier front and rear bumpers. The MY2014 Civic Coupe also features new side mirrors and new wheel designs, with larger size wheels on some models.

All Civic models received a number of premium interior refinements including new seat fabrics, door panel trim and audio panel color coordination. Honda also had the new Civic Coupe undergo performance upgrades like revised suspension tuning with higher spring rates and a stiffer rear stabilizer bar. The version also received a revised exhaust system that hiked power output (by 3 hp to 143 hp) and torque (by 1 lb-ft of torque to 129 lb-ft).

The Civic EX and EX-L Coupe models received new steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. For a smoother gear transition and better fuel efficiency, Honda replaced the 5-speed automatic gearbox with an all-new CVT in both the Coupe and Sedan, except Civic Natural Gas. The Civic Hybrid, meanwhile, retains its current CVT.

The new CVT promised better responsiveness by providing faster and smoother acceleration while improving fuel efficiency – thanks to a 22-percent wider ratio range and reduced internal friction.

The new CVT is proven to have helped the new Civic achieve higher EPA fuel economy ratings to 30 mpg city (+2 mpg; +1 in models equipped with paddle shifters) and 33 mpg combined (+1 mpg). While the Civic Si Coupe gets the same styling enhancements as the standard Civic Coupe, it features Si-exclusive design cues like a distinct lower front bumper garnish and a larger rear decklid spoiler, as well as distinctive front and rear air diffusers.

Both the performance-tweaked Si Coupe and Si Sedan are treated to 18-inch wheels and tires featuring new wheel designs. The Civic Si Coupe and Sedan are also treated to revised suspension tuning -- with higher spring rates, new dampers and stiffer rear stabilizer bar. Their power performance also received some boost with 4 hp more output (to 205 hp) and 4 lb-ft more torque (to 174 lb-ft), thanks to a retuned exhaust system.

The 2014 Honda Civic now boasts of new premium features. Customers are spoiled with standard and available features like a new 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen control center with optional navigation function and Smart Entry with Push Button start. Other standard and available features include expanded view driver's mirror and Honda LaneWatch blind spot display, available auto on/off headlights and power driver seat with 8-way adjustability.

The MY2014 Honda Civic Coupe and Sedan can be availed in LX, EX, EX-L and EX-L Navi versions. The Civic HF, meanwhile, could only be availed in a sedan body style. On the other hand, the Civic Si Coupe and Sedan are available in standard and Navi trims. Standard, Leather, Navi, and Leather Navi variants are available for the Civic Hybrid. The Civic Natural Gas is available in standard trim and a new Leather Navi version.

Modern Steel Metallic is available for the MY2014 Civic Sedan and Coupe -- including Si models – as exterior color. Meanwhile, Orange Fire Pearl is available for the Si Coupe and Si Sedan.

Honda commenced sales of the MY2014 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe at its dealerships across the United States on December 4, 2013. However, the Civic Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas will begin selling early in 2014. Honda will start sales of the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan in the spring.
